Disaster Preparedness Plan for Pets
Pets are cherished members of our families, and their safety is paramount during a disaster. Whether it’s a hurricane, wildfire, or another emergency, having a disaster preparedness plan in place for your pets can make a critical difference.
Here are some comprehensive tips to ensure your pets are well-prepared and protected in the event of a disaster:
First, create a pet emergency kit:
- This should include essentials such as enough food, water, and medications for at least two weeks, along with a manual can opener, food dishes, and water bowls.
- Make sure your pet’s identification is up to date, including their microchip information and a collar with an ID tag that includes your phone number and address.
- Don't forget to pack comfort items like your pet’s favourite toys, bedding, or blankets to help reduce their anxiety in unfamiliar environments.
Secure important documents:
- Store your pet’s vaccination records, medical history, and any current medications in a waterproof container.
- Keep a photo of you with your pet, along with adoption papers or registration documents, to prove ownership if you get separated.
Identify safe havens:
- Research and find pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or boarding facilities outside your immediate area. You can also arrange with friends or family outside the disaster zone to care for your pets if needed.
Develop a pet evacuation plan:
- Regularly practice loading your pets into carriers and vehicles to reduce stress during an actual evacuation. If evacuation isn’t possible, designate a safe room in your home away from windows and hazardous materials.
Training:
- Behavioural support can make a big difference during stressful situations. Reinforce basic commands and crate training to help manage your pet. Consider using calming aids such as pheromone sprays, anxiety wraps, or calming treats to help soothe your pet.
Community resources:
- Connect with other pet owners in your community to share resources and support during a disaster. Follow local animal rescue organizations (Bahamas Humane Society) on social media for pet-specific advice and updates.
Stay informed.
- Familiarize yourself with the types of disasters that are common in your area and have a clear understanding of the local evacuation routes and pet-friendly shelters.
- Regularly monitor local news and weather reports for updates on any impending threats. Follow official DRM Authority social media platforms and the Department of Meteorology for emergency alerts and to receive timely information. Being proactive and informed will help you make quick, effective decisions to protect you and your pets when disaster strikes.
Prepare for the worst case scenario:
- Use a pet rescue alert sticker on your home’s front door to inform emergency personnel that pets are inside. If you must evacuate without your pets, leave them in a secure area with plenty of food and water, and post a notice on your door indicating the number of pets inside and your contact information.
